About this pack

Pack 2 extended the sentence by adding an object. Pack 3 takes a different step, adding detail about where and when the action happens.

Students learn that a sentence still needs its core parts: a subject and what they do or did. But sentences can also carry extra information about the action, where it happens, when it happens, or both. That information may appear at the start of the sentence or at the end. Students read decodable, phonics-aligned cards and decide: is this a sentence, or is it a fragment?

What this pack teaches

A sentence is a complete thought that makes sense on its own. A sentence has two parts:

• a subject — who or what

• a verb — what they do or did

  
  

In this pack, sentences include extra information about the action:

• where it happens

• when it happens

This information may come at the start or end of the sentence. A complete sentence still needs a subject and what they do or did. If one part is missing, it is a fragment.

Examples from the pack:

• Sally played under the tall gum trees — complete sentence

• ran along the path — fragment (no subject)

• a bird — fragment (no verb)

Language and Phonics alignment

All sentences are decodable and controlled to early phonics patterns:

• Word structures: CCVC, CVCC

• Consonant digraphs: th, ng, ck, ch

• Vowel patterns: ar, ee, ay

• Split digraphs: a_e, i_e, o_e

• Past tense -ed

• Irregular past tense verbs

• Pronouns as subjects

• Simple adjectives

• Time phrases

• High-frequency words: the, a, my, we, they, on, in, at, to
