About this pack

In earlier packs, sentences were built around what someone or something did. Pack 4 extends that further. Sentences can also show what is happening, what something is like, and what someone has, and to do that, the verb often needs more than one word.

This pack introduces the verb group: a combination of is, are, was, were, or has with an action word to express meaning that a single verb cannot. Students read fully decodable, phonics-aligned cards and decide: is this a sentence, or is it a fragment?

What this pack teaches

A sentence is a complete thought that makes sense on its own. A sentence has two parts:

  • a subject — who or what

  • a verb — what they do or did

In this pack, the verb has more than one word. We call this a verb group. A complete sentence still needs a subject and what is happening. If one part is missing, it is a fragment.

Sentences in this pack can show:

  • what is happening — the kids are brushing their teeth before bed

  • what something is like — the living room is bright with sunlight

  • what someone has — nan has a roast in the oven for Sunday dinner

Examples from the pack:

  • dad is cooking dinner in the messy kitchen — complete sentence

  • is reading a book about outer space — fragment (no subject)

  • the living room — fragment (no verb group)
